Pahansila-Davis Educational Project Site Visit - 2008

Pahansila-Davis Educational Project co-benefactor, Mr. Kelley Davis visited Kandy (Sri Lanka) to monitor the progress of the project. This is his fourth visit since the inception of this special project in 2005. During his visit, he met our volunteers and they visited Sarana Sevana children's home and Polgollawatte School. At Sarana Sevana, Mr. Davis got the opportunity to meet teachers and the representatives of the Board of Management of the orphanage. At Polgollawatte School Mr. Davis met with the Principal of the school and the teachers. The staff showed him the new school library. The books and the furniture for this library was donated by Pahansila-Davis Educational Project. We are thankful to Mr. Davis for taking time off to supervise the project and also to all our Kandy volunteers and the heads of the institutions he visited for all the arrangements.

Sarana Sevana Children's Home Gets More Donations

A long-time Pahansila donor, Prof. Jude Fernando of Boston, USA, donated several sanitary and emergency equipment to Sarana Sevana children's home. These include a re-chargeable emergency light, toothpaste, tooth brushes, soap, detergent, and laundry bags. Additionally he donated several sports equipment including cricket bats and tennis balls. Pahansila Committee is grateful to Prof. Fernando for his generosity.

More Books Donated to Polgollawatte School Library

A long-time Pahansila donor, Ms. Aruni Shapiro (Knoxville, USA), and Ms. Champika Karunadasa (Kandy, Sri Lanka), donated several Sinhala and English books to Polgollawatte School library. There were over 25 books and some were written by the donors themselves. Pahansila General Coordinating Committee member Dr. Chandana Karunatilake handed them over to the Principal of the school, Mr. Nishantha Tennakoon. Pahansila committee wishes to thank the donors.

Aruni has pledged to donate any proceedings from her book sales to Pahansila Scholarship Project.

First Batch of Vocational and Technical Training Students Graduated

First batch of students who followed Vocational and Technical training courses at National Youth Council, Polgolla (Kandy) under Pahansila-Davis Educational Project successfully completed their course recently. We are proud to announce that all students who completed the hotelier course found jobs at well reputed hotels in Kandy area.

We have already started recruiting new students for 2009 batch. Pahansila wishes to continue this project annually. We are further exploring options to provide interest free loans for the students who successfully completed the course and are willing start their own businesses. We are grateful to our donors and volunteers.

Pahansila General Committee Representative Supervising the Project at Sarana Sevana

Pahansila General Coordinating Committee member, Chandana Karunatilake and Pahansila-Davis project administrator V. Subramaniam visited Sarana Sevana children's home to supervise the progress of the projects conducted at the facility. The familes of Mr. Karunatilake and Subramanium joined them at this occasion and provided a meal for the students. A long time Pahansila donor, Prof. Jude Fernando also joined the event.

First Issue of "Pahansila Puwath" was Released

It is our great pleasure to announce the first issue of the "Pahansila Puwath" newsletter was released in April 2008.

This newsletter will give you more frequent updates on how your contributions are making a difference on a life of a Sri Lankan student. It will help you find information about real life success stories of students who benefited from the generosity of donors like you. We are hoping to publish this newsletter once every four months so that you would be kept up to date on the activities of Pahansila.

We appreciate your comments and suggestions. Please send them to the editor.

Pahansila Reaches 200 Scholarships

Pahansila awarded its 200th scholarship in May 2008. At present there are 113 active scholarships and 91 completed (or terminated) projects. We are grateful to our donors and volunteers for all the hard work.

Official Opening Ceremony of Polgollawatte School Library

An event was organized at Polgollawatte School to officially open the library donated by Pahansila-Davis Educational Project. An Assistant Director of the Education Department participated at this occasion. Pahansila-Davis project was represented by our volunteers, Mr. Nandasena Perera (Financial Adminsitrator of Pahansila-Davis Project) and Mrs. Ruwangani Jayasundara (Project Supervisor). As the first stage, over 340 new books were bought and handed over to the Principal of the school. Additionally, several educational posters and furniture required for the library including a book cabinet, a paper stand, and a notice board were provided. Under the stage one approximately US$700 have been spent.

We wish to thank Davis family for their generous contribution, Pahansila volunteers for their untiring dedication, and the Principal and the staff of Polgollawatte School for their corporation.
